Winchester Bay

Hey everybody! We are here on the Oregon Coast, probably Callin's happiest place to be! The house we are staying in is a block from the Umpqua River which takes us through the bar (basically where the river feeds into the ocean and it has rocks along both edges of the river called the jetty.) The coast guard reports are one of my favorite parts, they say "Securitae, Securitae, Securitae" at the start of their bar reports. Just like it looks. It makes me laugh. We went fishing on Saturday, our first morning here, and poor Darby got so sick! Jakoby doesn't even care about the rocking of the boat, as long as she gets fed. The water was pretty rough, and it was raining, but it was so much fun! The big joke was that I caught all of the big fish because I knocked everyone over getting to the poles! We caught our limit which is 8 fish. With Salmon, that is a lot of fish! On Sunday the ward we went to was so old, I mean, mature. The speaker in Sacrament talked about forks in the road and how you don't want to end up in Idaho. She had no idea and we laughed a lot. The next time we went fishing was on Monday. The water was really calm, and made me sick! It was still fun, but the best part was the 50 pound, 5 foot long (yep we measured!) SHARK we caught. Well Dave fought with it for an hour. It took a while to convince the shark that he was caught. Dave didn't know he had a shark, otherwise he would have cut it loose and lost the gear. But we got it in the boat, he was hooked in the fin, or he would have bit through the fishing line. He was really big and really creepy. We set him free and he swam off, but we had to "stun" him to get the hooks out, so we might have made him a dorkfish and gave him a hole in his dorsal fin. We caught our limit again on Monday. But we weren't able to go out because of the weather until today, Thursday. The water was rough again and we had Darby doped up, so she did fine. I caught a 28 inch 11 pound Chinook Salmon. It was fun because the Chinook will come up to the surface of the water, see the boat, and then they dive straight down. It was a bit of a fight, but it was really fun. We get up at 5 in the morning, so we are ready for naps at 2! It has been a really fun trip and I have learned a lot! Darby doesn't like to look at the fish, she doesn't like the smell of the fish, but she can't wait to eat the fish! I look forward to seeing everyone again soon. Love you! The Mays
