Winchester Bay

Hey everybody! We are here on the Oregon Coast, probably Callin's happiest place to be! The house we are staying in is a block from the Umpqua River which takes us through the bar (basically where the river feeds into the ocean and it has rocks along both edges of the river called the jetty.) The coast guard reports are one of my favorite parts, they say "Securitae, Securitae, Securitae" at the start of their bar reports. Just like it looks. It makes me laugh. We went fishing on Saturday, our first morning here, and poor Darby got so sick! Jakoby doesn't even care about the rocking of the boat, as long as she gets fed. The water was pretty rough, and it was raining, but it was so much fun! The big joke was that I caught all of the big fish because I knocked everyone over getting to the poles! We caught our limit which is 8 fish. With Salmon, that is a lot of fish! On Sunday the ward we went to was so old, I mean, mature. The speaker in Sacrament talked about forks in the road and how you don't want to end up in Idaho. She had no idea and we laughed a lot. The next time we went fishing was on Monday. The water was really calm, and made me sick! It was still fun, but the best part was the 50 pound, 5 foot long (yep we measured!) SHARK we caught. Well Dave fought with it for an hour. It took a while to convince the shark that he was caught. Dave didn't know he had a shark, otherwise he would have cut it loose and lost the gear. But we got it in the boat, he was hooked in the fin, or he would have bit through the fishing line. He was really big and really creepy. We set him free and he swam off, but we had to "stun" him to get the hooks out, so we might have made him a dorkfish and gave him a hole in his dorsal fin. We caught our limit again on Monday. But we weren't able to go out because of the weather until today, Thursday. The water was rough again and we had Darby doped up, so she did fine. I caught a 28 inch 11 pound Chinook Salmon. It was fun because the Chinook will come up to the surface of the water, see the boat, and then they dive straight down. It was a bit of a fight, but it was really fun. We get up at 5 in the morning, so we are ready for naps at 2! It has been a really fun trip and I have learned a lot! Darby doesn't like to look at the fish, she doesn't like the smell of the fish, but she can't wait to eat the fish! I look forward to seeing everyone again soon. Love you! The Mays

Hi Everybody! I had a few minutes so I sat down and started reading the blog and laughing and forgot I was cooking lasagna noodles so they are over-cooked, again! I always do that to lasagna noodles but I have to tell you what a great time I was having reading everyone's snippets of info! This is great! We should write a book. I am so glad that Carrie sends us pictures of home, church, turtles, etc. to see what things are like there for them. I am glad they are loving it there! I laughed to see how Trent says birthday! Megan is really a good, responsible driver. That doesn't surprise me but it sure makes me proud of her. Her family all slept or read while she drove home from Rigby. Now I would say they all had confidence in Megan's driving ability or they would have been giving her directions. And it is so fun to watch Madison learning Mikala's cheers! Of course, Mikala does them so good that it is fun to watch her and see her enjoying it. The weather isn't as hot this week but when the mosquitos are out I don't spend much time outside. Dad does a pretty good job spraying them and keeping them under control but they have been bad the last few days. The 4th was hot! We went to the parade to see Zach, Shanna, and Mikala in the parade. I got a sun burn on my toes. Aunt Nila is here for a couple of weeks. I am having them over for supper tonight (I will have to serve over-cooked noodles in the lasagna). Tomorrow night is scouts so couldn't do it then or the rest of the week. Megan and Mikala are going on the hand-cart trek next week, I don't know if they know there is a big ole wild fire raging up by there right now. They were told there would be lots of blowing sand, I would also add blowing black cinders to that now! I love the pictures everyone puts on the blog! I would add ours to that but I don't have anything new or interesting to add right now! Oh well! Love, Grandma

Trent's Ninja Turtle...

Last week Trent came running into me yelling with excitement, yet a little scared, that there was a Ninja Turtle at our house! I laughed and said " that's neat Bud." He kept telling me to come and see. I realized then that he was completely serious and the thought occurred to me that I wasp going have to break the news to him that they are fake. He kept saying it with a rush in his voice so I decided to calmly tell him that they were fake. Thinking that he would pause and react to this I had prepared myself for a melt down, but no way he continued to be persistent about this Ninja Turtle outside. As I stopped to think and listened to the surrounding sounds for one second I realized that Trey to was outside screaming about this Ninja Turtle. With Trent's persistence and Trey screaming to I thought to myself that just maybe there was one....So I decided to go along with it and head outside. This is what we found! It doesn't look very big but he was! I have never seen a turtle this big just out roaming around in our yard, never mind the this big part, I have never seen a turtle out roaming around in our yard period! Trey and Trent watched it for most of the day as it roamed our front yard. They came in for a little and it was gone when they went back out. But they still talk about it, especially Trent. Right before quiet times that day he told me "mom if you look out the window and see my Ninja Turtle make sure to come and get me"! He has picked to have a Ninja Turtle party for his Dirpday. (that is how he says birthday)
